Tulevaisuuden ratkaisijat

Building the Teams of Tomorrow

Tulevaisuuden Ratkaisijat – Future Problem Solvers is a browser-based educational game that encourages players to explore future working life through collaboration, problem-solving, and the recognition of different skills and strengths. Players encounter fictional challenges set in the future and must consider what kinds of people, knowledge, and perspectives would be needed to solve them.

The game was developed as part of the Tulevaisuusloikka – Toiselta asteelta tulevaisuuteen project. The project focuses on strengthening future-oriented thinking, competence identity, and the ability of students to recognize their own skills and opportunities in a changing working life. Kajaani University of Applied Sciences participates in the project together with Oulu University of Applied Sciences, the University of Lapland, and the Finland Futures Research Centre at the University of Turku.

Gameplay

In Tulevaisuuden Ratkaisijat, players work together to solve eight fictional challenges related to the future of working life. For each challenge, the players assemble a team of people with different strengths, skills, and interests. Different combinations lead to different approaches and solutions, demonstrating that complex problems rarely have only one correct answer.

The game is designed primarily for small groups of two to three players. Team members discuss the available choices, consider which capabilities might be valuable in each situation, and decide together how they want to approach the challenge. This makes collaboration and discussion an important part of the experience rather than simply finding the technically correct combination.

The experience runs directly in a web browser without a separate installation. A computer browser is recommended for the best experience. A complete facilitated activity takes approximately 30-45 minutes, including gameplay and discussion.

Teaching Content

Tulevaisuuden Ratkaisijat is designed to support future-oriented thinking and broaden learners’ understanding of changing careers, skills, and working environments. Instead of predicting what the future will look like, the game encourages players to consider multiple possible futures and recognize that different combinations of expertise can be valuable when responding to new challenges.

A central learning objective is the recognition of strengths and competencies. By selecting people for different future scenarios, players consider how technical expertise, interpersonal abilities, creativity, interests, and other personal strengths can complement one another within a team.

The game works particularly well as part of guided teaching, career counselling, or workshops. After playing, participants can discuss which challenges interested them most, why they selected particular team members, and what kinds of future challenges they themselves would like to help solve. The activity can also be combined with exercises focusing on personal strengths, competence recognition, and future career planning.

Game Design

The content and scenarios of Tulevaisuuden Ratkaisijat were developed collaboratively with the project’s substance experts, primarily representing the project partner organizations. The design process combined game development methods with workshops and other participatory content design activities.

During the workshops, the experts contributed their knowledge of future working life, skills, education, and changing competence needs. These ideas were transformed together with the game development team into the challenges, characters, skills, and other content used in the game.

This collaborative approach helped ensure that the game combines an engaging and approachable game experience with content grounded in the expertise and perspectives of the participating organizations.
