Metal Workshop VR is a virtual reality game designed to teach players how to operate a manual lathe. The game provides guidance on starting up the lathe and emphasizes safety procedures. Players can practice realistic start-up procedures and use the lathe to create various objects.
Gameplay
The game begins with the machine in an unpowered state. The player must carry out all the correct startup actions and enter the right values for the job.
The game features an interactive tutorial that guides the player through all the necessary actions. After completing all the preparations, players can test their skills and create shapes of the target object using the lathe.
Game Design
The main gameplay elements and machine functionality were created using KAO introduction and educational videos. The 3D modeling was based on a model created for the JIT city, which was modified for VR use.
KAO provided technical knowledge of the machine and operational instructions. A procedural 3D model was also designed to enable real-time molding with the lathe.
Teaching Content
The Kainuu Vocational College provided information about machine operations. The correct control methods were implemented in the game, allowing players to practice their skills in virtual reality before using the real device.
All necessary controls and machine qualities were designed to resemble a real lathe closely.
Future Development
Metal Workshop VR was developed as a small educational game to explore the use of virtual reality for educational purposes in the field of metal work.
The project's experiences have been very promising, generating considerable interest from all participating parties in expanding the game's content in the future.
