Mysteeri 24/7 - Learning Life
Overcome life's challenges in virtual reality adventure!
Learning Life - Mysteeri 24/7 is an immersive escape game for vocational rehabilitation and youth work. Learning Life is a single-player game with linear gameplay with varying tasks and puzzles.
The game is available on Oculus Quest as a VR experience and on steam as a first person desktop game. Game was created in cooperation with Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, Laurea University of Applied Sciences and Häme University of Applied Sciences. Development was funded by Kela.
Gameplay
In Learning Life – Mysteeri 24/7 the player adapts a role of a youth facing everyday challenges. Game is presented in first-person view and players are tasked to solve different issues and problems. The game has three levels: finding and moving to a new home, applying for a job or a place of study, and managing the chaos of everyday life.
Players can interact with the world either with VR controllers or a keyboard and mouse, move around different virtual environments and solve puzzles and perform various tasks. Although the issues presented in the game can be serious, they are presented in the game with a lighter humorous touch.
Teaching Content
Learning Life was created in cooperation with experts from different fields of expertise including serious games, nursing, social work, and rehabilitation. The main themes for the individual levels of the game levels were decided based on game workshops organized for the youth and professionals.
Context experts designed the detailed content for the game in general level, and these plans were transformed and adapted to gameplay elements by the game development team. Cooperation between all the development parties was very frequent in all development phases.
Since the game is designed to be a useful tool for experts working with youth, an handbook for professionals was also created to help utilize the experiences from the game to youth rehabilitation.
Game Design
Virtual reality functionalities were created using the Clever SE VR platform.
Virtual reality functionalities were created using the Clever SE VR platform, so that most of the development processes concentrated on adding content to the game. The testing for the game was mainly performed by the actual end users. After the first rounds of testing directing the player posed the largest challenge, so an in-game narrator was added throughout the game.
Future Development
Learning Life – Mysteeri 24/7 is currently available only in Finnish. Based on the very positive feedback the development organizations would be interested in further developing the game. Adding more language options or easy-to-play customization would further advance the use of the game environment. There are also plans to add more in-game analytics, so that the game would offer usable rehabilitation data for youth instructors.
