JÄTTI

Technology Supporting Ice Hockey Coaching.

JÄTTI develops a technology-based coaching environment for the Vuokatti sports ecosystem. As part of the project, Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK) is developing a digital coaching and tactics board that combines exercise planning, player tracking, and performance analysis into a single system.

The digital tactics board utilizes an indoor positioning system developed by Iiwari Oy, which provides real-time information about player locations and movements on the ice. This allows coaches to compare planned exercises with actual player performance and use recorded movement data to support coaching, feedback, and training development.

Coaching and Training

The digital tactics board allows coaches to design ice hockey exercises directly within the system. Player routes, movements, and different phases of an exercise can be drawn onto a digital representation of the rink and saved for later use.

During training, player movements recorded by the indoor positioning system can be visualized and compared with the planned exercise. This provides coaches with a clearer picture of how players move on the ice, how well an exercise is executed, and where differences between the planned and actual performance occur.

Exercises and recorded performances can be stored and organized into individual training sessions. Coaches can return to previous sessions, compare performances over time, and use the collected information when planning future training.

Software Development

KAMK and the Clever Simulation team are responsible for developing the digital coaching and tactics board and integrating the different technologies into a practical coaching tool.

Development focuses on creating an easy-to-use interface that allows coaches to design exercises, manage training sessions, visualize player movement data, and review recorded performances without requiring specialist knowledge of data analysis.

By combining exercise planning, indoor positioning, visualization, and movement analysis, JÄTTI provides coaches with a new way to examine training and player performance in greater detail. The collected information can support coaching decisions while helping players better understand their own movement and performance on the ice.

Performance Analysis

One of the main goals of the JÄTTI system is to make movement and performance data easier to understand and utilize in everyday coaching. Instead of reviewing positioning data only as numerical information, player movements can be presented visually on the rink.

Players can receive visual feedback during or after an exercise, helping them understand their positioning, movement patterns, and execution of different situations. Recorded exercises can also be reviewed from different perspectives, making it easier to identify differences between players or between repeated performances.

The system is developed in cooperation with the University of Jyväskylä and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The University of Jyväskylä contributes expertise in sports analytics, while VTT develops automatic movement analysis methods that can complement the information provided by the positioning system.

Availability

The JÄTTI digital coaching and tactics board is being developed as part of the project for use in ice hockey coaching and training. Following development and testing, the software can also be made available to interested organizations, coaches, and other potential users.

The software will be distributed through a suitable digital distribution platform, allowing interested parties to access and install the application on supported devices. More detailed information about availability, system requirements, and distribution will be provided as the development progresses.
