Blanket Heavy With Nightmares
It's time to revisit your nightmares.
Blanket Heavy With Nightmares is based on an art installation created By Finnish artist Suvi Solkio. The main aim of this project was to develop new innovative methods for presenting contemporary art and also to see what kind of emotional responses can be provoked in the players.
The game is placed in contemporary art museums and is aimed at making more people interested in both the art installation and the technological aspect surrounding the virtual reality production. It can also be used as a tool for museum and art education.
Gameplay
The experience has been designed to be very user-friendly, and the game is controlled by the user's gaze. The main interface for selecting nightmares is the art piece itself, where the players can select different scenarios from the blanket and then experience their choice.
As with most real dreams, the players can only observe what is happening during the nightmares without any control over the events, creating another layer of realism.
Game Design
The nightmares visualized in the project were designed in cooperation with both the artist and Kajaani Art Museum. The development team helped design the main visual outlook for all the nightmare scenes. Individual nightmares were then developed as different levels in the game and gaze controlled game play mechanics, 3D-models, animations, environmental sounds and other features were developed based on the needs of the nightmare.
Teaching Content
The content for these nightmares was designed based on the art piece itself and also on the background stories collected about the nightmare.
The development team designed the entirety of the nightmare experience. The main development goal was to keep the general atmosphere of the nightmare as close to the original story as possible.
Future Development
Blanket Heavy With Nightmares is part of a project investigating new methods for presenting art and other museum content in a refreshing and intriguing way.
